The new solution combines CTERA InsightAI Data Service with CTERA Archive, bringing AI-driven recommendations and a governed workflow to a traditionally manual data lifecycle management process. CTERA’s bespoke analysis of over 16 petabytes of live production data, captured across 856 file-share discovery scans in enterprise NAS environments across multiple industries, found that just 4.4% of stored capacity consists of data that users and applications regularly access. Across this massive estate, 88.3% of files had not been accessed in more than a year, while less than 10% of stored capacity had been accessed within the previous 90 days. The challenge for IT teams is determining which data can be safely moved to a lower-cost tier without compromising governance, accessibility, or future value.
The CTERA Data Archiving Solution helps IT teams determine what data should be archived and how. CTERA InsightAI uses agentic AI to infer what each file contains from its metadata – filename, path, extension, and directory context – and assess its value to the business, combining that understanding with age, type, size, and usage patterns to recommend which data can be archived. Because archived files stay within the CTERA Intelligent Data Platform, they remain governed and accessible to AI and analytics without a separate retrieval or rehydration step, so cold data can be moved off primary storage without being taken out of reach.
